🌱 Natomas Costco + Sutter Health Lawsuit + I'm With Cupid

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, neighbors! Jeri Karges here with the latest copy of theSacramento Daily.

First, today's weather:

Plenty of sun. High: 73 Low: 40.

Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento:

  1. A new Costco is planned for the area of East Commerce Way and Arena Boulevard in Natomas. According to the layout, other stores, like a Starbucks and other retail outlets, are going in around it. Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby says the 160,000 square-foot location has been in the works for a year and is expected to open in 2023. (CBS Sacramento)
  2. A 102-acre site — south of Meadowview Road, north of Cosumnes River Boulevard and east of 24th Street – recently was purchased for $12.3 million by the City of Sacramento. The City has ambitious ideas for its potential uses: affordable housing, a service center, a community park. Long-term uses of the property will be decided after significant community input, officials said. Councilmember Mai Vang, who represents the area and was instrumental in the acquisition of the property has created this webpage to provide more information for people interested in attending her upcoming community listening sessions. Visitors also can take a survey there to help determine potential uses for the site. (Sacramento City Express)
  3. A lawsuit over high health care bills filed on behalf of more than 3 million employers and people seeks as much as $1.2 billion from Sutter Health in an antitrust class-action trial that got underway Thursday. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit allege in court documents that Sutter Health abused its market power and "caused enormous adverse economic impacts" by discouraging patients from using lower-cost insurance and lower-cost hospitals. Sutter Health said in a statement Wednesday that it looks forward to "demonstrating that in Northern California's highly competitive market, Sutter's integrated healthcare network provides high-quality care that creates efficiencies, drives down total cost of care and benefits the diverse communities we serve." (FOX40)
  4. The roadway was blocked in Sacramento Thursday morning by a stopped train, according to police. The Union Pacific Train was stopped in the area of Elder Creek and Power Inn roads and drivers were asked to use alternate routes. Officers had initially responded to reports of a collision between the train and a pedestrian, but police said they were unable to locate a victim or evidence of a person being struck. (KCRA3)
  5. Many Pacific Gas and Electric customers are doing a double take on their recent bills. Some ratepayers are seeing their bill listed as double or triple what they normally pay. Lucas Davis is a professor and researcher at UC Berkeley. Professor Davis examines energy and environmental markets saying "Natural gas prices are pretty high right now and I think until we see that change, it's going to be reflected in higher natural gas bills." Davis said high demand and soft supply created the current market. The professor also said that increased exports pushes the price up in North America. When asked if the price hike has anything to do with its history of mismanaging multiple incidents leading to fines and settlements, Megan McFarland, a PG&E spokesperson said, "No, the price of gas is something that we're passing to our customers. It has nothing to do with some of the other challenges that PG&E has faced." (CBS Sacramento)
