The district, serving North Highlands, North Sacramento, Rio Linda, Natomas and more, is emphasizing a welcoming, supportive start. Carroz visited multiple campuses, sharing her own refugee-to-educator story with one of the region's most diverse school communities.
   

3. Ex-Sacramento councilman Loloee's employees plead guilty to filing false tax returns (sacbee.com) — A former Sacramento City Council member's legal saga is intensifying as two Viva Supermarket employees plead guilty to filing false tax returns tied to his case. The stores in Del Paso Heights, North Sacramento, and Rancho Cordova primarily serve Latino neighborhoods, and the former councilman already admitted to obstructing federal investigations and misusing COVID relief funds.
   

4. Abyssinian ground hornbill with heart disease dies at Sacramento Zoo (fox40.com) — Sacramento Zoo is mourning Mark, a 35-year-old Abyssinian ground hornbill who spent most of his life at the zoo and recently died from age-related organ failure. Keepers had been closely monitoring his heart disease and prioritized his comfort in his final months. Staff are now watching his longtime companion Roxy as they cope with the loss of this charismatic ambassador bird.
   

5. Sticky rice and heavenly beef at a Laotian restaurant in South Sacramento (abridged.org) — Sacramento food lovers get a deep dive into South Sacramento's Cocomilk Cafe, where sticky rice, "heavenly beef," and Laotian street-food flavors anchor the menu.
