🌱 Sacramento Amazon Fresh + Volunteers Needed for Homeless Count
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

Rise and shine, Sacramento! It's Wednesday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on today in Sacramento.
First, today's weather:
Fog in the a.m.; mostly sunny. High: 62 Low: 33.
Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento:
- The Sacramento City Unified School District on Monday began distributing N95 and KF94 masks to its older students across 27 middle and high schools. Each student will get five masks. While distribution has begun, actually receiving the masks may take a while due to ongoing staffing shortages, according to the school district. Sac City Unified has broken its distribution into two phases, the first being for middle through high schools and the second for K-6th-grade students. Distribution has not yet begun for the second phase, and a date has not yet been released. (KCRA3)
- A shortage of fuel stations is leading to a speed-bump on the hydrogen highway. Drivers trying to help the environment are instead seeing their patience tried. More than a dozen cars were waiting to fill up at just one pump on Monday. "It's been a little over three hours already," said Eugene Maksymovich, a hydrogen-powered car owner. There are only three gas stations in the Sacramento region that sell the clean burning fuel, but right now, two of them are broken. Hydrogen-powered vehicles first appeared six years ago, and more than 12,000 are currently registered in California. They are a key part of the state's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and new clean air standards that go into effect in 2035, but with few fuel stations and hours-long lines, prospective car buyers may make a different decision. It's not just a problem where we live. Right now, there are only 49 hydrogen pumps in all of California. Officials do say they plan on more than doubling that number in the future. (CBS Sacramento)
- An innovative grocery store designed by Amazon is heading to the Sacramento area The grocery store is called Amazon Fresh and is already serving many areas in Southern California. The store carries everything you'd expect to find at a typical grocery store but with Amazon prices and some prepared foods that are made fresh daily. One of the other hyped features is referred to as "Just Walk Out" technology, which lets people skip the checkout line. Amazon says computer algorithms and sensor fusion identify what's put inside the cart. I wonder if they sell dog food for Astro or Spacely Sprockets? Anyway, when it comes to where in the Sacramento area this store will go and when it'll open its doors, that part is still to be determined. (ABC10)
- Some bank branches in Sacramento are temporarily closing due to the pandemic. But what happens if you have to access a safe deposit box inside one of those branches? Well, most major banks will allow you to make an appointment to access your box, but that could take several days or longer. The best advice is to take out anything you might need on short notice like passports, medical directives, living wills and cash or equivalents. In other words, the only things you should store where it is safe are things you don't really need. Hmmmm..... (CBS Sacramento)
- As the omicron variant impacts the Sacramento City Unified School District, many parents are opting for independent studies. But, due to staffing shortages, students have been left to wait for months to join the program. During that time, they are being asked to work on take-home packets with no direct supervision. Hundreds of students are still waiting to get an independent studies teacher. Superintendent Jorge Aguilar said he's aware parents are frustrated and he's hopeful for a solution this week following a meeting with the teacher's union. (FOX40)

- One of Scotland's most celebrated fiddle players has put down roots in Nevada City, a former frontier town built largely on the backs of Scottish pathfinders. Alasdair Fraser may get offers to perform around the world, but he says he's just as happy playing locally because he knows there's a link between his adopted home and the misty lochs and meadows that first bred his love of music. On February 9, he'll perform at Auburn's 92-year-old State Theatre with cellist Natalie Haas. (Sacramento News & Review)
