🌱Tara O'Sullivan Bridge Dedication + Crystal Creamery Athletes

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Sacramento.

(Patch Media)

Hey, people of Sacramento! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Sacramento Daily.

First, today's weather:

Patchy fog, then sun. High: 69 Low: 36.

Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today:

  1. On the heels of California announcing on Monday that it will lift its statewide mask requirement for vaccinated individuals later this month, Sacramento County confirmed that it is following suit. Monday's announcement will allow for vaccinated people to not have to wear masks indoors in most settings after Feb. 15. Unvaccinated people still will be required to be masked indoors, and everyone — vaccinated or not — will have to wear masks in higher-risk areas like public transit and nursing homes and other congregate living facilities, officials said. (KCRA3)
  2. The American River H Street Bridge was renamed on Sunday after Tara O'Sullivan, a Sacramento police officer who was shot and killed in 2019 while responding to a domestic violence call. "Tara was an amazing person she and her family gave ALL for our City," Daniel Hahn, former police chief for the Sacramento Police Department, tweeted on Sunday. O'Sullivan grew up in the East Bay community of Pleasant Hill before beginning her educational career at Sacramento State in 2017 where she was enrolled in the Law Enforcement Candidate Scholars program. She joined the Sacramento Police Department in January 2018 and was accepted into the police academy in July 2018. (KCRA3)
  3. Crews responded to a house fire on Jefferson Boulevard in West Sacramento Sunday saving a woman from the blaze, said the West Sacramento Fire Department. Upon arrival, crews located one resident outside of the house who told them that his wife was trapped inside the burning structure. Firefighters entered the house and located the disabled woman lying on the floor. The victim sustained no injuries thanks to the quick action of the fire crew. (Good Day Sacramento)
  4. Produced by the Downtown Sacramento Partnership and presented by Kaiser Permanente, the highly-anticipated State of Downtown breakfast will take place on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, from 8 to 10 a.m. at SAFE Credit Union Convention Center. The event will celebrate Sacramento's urban core, highlight the projects and amenities recently completed, and preview exciting new and upcoming revitalization initiatives. The celebratory program will feature an address by both Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and Downtown Sacramento Partnership Executive Director Michael Ault, plus a thought-provoking keynote address by Stuart Mangrum, Director of the Philosophical Center of Burning Man Project. 5. Folsom High's varsity football team and Oak Ridge's varsity girls' volleyball team will be recognized on Crystal Creamery milk cartons. "Crystal Creamery is celebrating the successful return of high school sports this past fall with these commemorative milk cartons," said Brian Carden, Senior Director of Sales and Marketing for Crystal Creamery. "I want to thank Crystal Creamery, who has been a tremendous supporter of high school football," Folsom High's Athletic Director Lisa Finley said. "I know our families really appreciate their support and have enjoyed collecting the milk cartons in the past and look forward to this season's recognition and collecting the 2021 carton."
