Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Saturday August 7th, 2021!

First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 99 Low: 59.

Here are the top stories in Sacramento today:

  1. A controversial Sacramento non-profit is poised to get a $450K city grant despite still making payments to The City of Sacramento for misuse of taxpayer funds in 2017. The non-profit, the Roberts Family Development Center, would use the funds to remodel its main hall. In 2017 the city reached a settlement with the non-profit that requires it to pay $7K/month back to the city. After the settlement the city froze any new funding to the organization until controls were put in place. If approved, this would be the first funding after that audit. (CBS Sacramento)
  2. A man has died and a mystery is unfolding after a shooting in Sacramento County late Thursday night. Authorities got a call of a man lying on the sidewalk at the 6400 block of Verner Avenue. Police arrived to find a man who had been shot. They attempted first aid, but medics soon pronounced him dead. Investigators don't have any information about the shooter or the motive and the identity of the man has not been released. If you have any information you are urged to call detectives at (916) 874-5115. (CBS Sacramento)
  3. Speaking of a mystery, one of my favorites is the mystery of what will be served at The Tower Bridge Dinner at the Farm to Fork Festival next month. What's not a mystery is that all of the ingredients are locally sourced. Nothing that the diners will be eating will come from out of state. All of the chefs converged at the Citizen Hotel to showcase their creations to other California chefs on Thursday. For this one day a year, I sure wish I was a California chef. (FOX40)
  4. Harsch Investment Properties, a privately-owned real estate company, announced that it had acquired 56 acres of land along I-5 and Metro Air Parkway. The site is located adjacent to Sacramento International Airport and 10 minutes north of downtown Sacramento. Harsch plans to develop the property as a multi-tenant industrial business park. 5. When the air quality is unhealthy in Sacramento, the City prohibits the use of any leaf blowers (electric or gas) to avoid contributing to harmful particles in the air. The code is applicable to businesses and residential homeowners who use portable blowers to clear areas of debris such as dirt and leaves. Jose Mendez, Code Enforcement Manager recommends that before taking out the leaf blower, you check the AQI for the Sacramento region on Spare the Air's website. (sacramentocityexpress.com)

Sacramento Patch Notebook

  • SCUSD is returning to school on September 2! If your student is not enrolled, now is the time to do it!(Facebook)
  • This place rocks! Let your kids explore on their own at this supervised playground. Sacramento Adventure Playground is not your parents' playground! First of all, parents aren't allowed, except to briefly check on kids. Secondly, it's not a jungle gym and baseball field. It's kinda more like a junkyard, with old tires, cardboard boxes, an old hospital gurney (!) and even a few polliwogs. Nobody tells the kids the rules for their games or how to craft something from the cardboard. Kids just get to figure out what to do with all of that stuff on their own, and they love it! I'd love it, too!
  • Dang it! We missed International Beer Day yesterday. Oh, well. It's never a bad day for a beer! In belated honor, here's a list of all of the craft breweries in and around Sacramento. Kampai!
