Hey, Sacramento! Here's everything you need to know to get this Sunday started off right.
First, today's weather:
Chilly with periods of sun. High: 49 Low: 38.
Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento:
- Sacramento County man, Pete Cameron, believes he's a victim of a new wave of EDD fraud. He has been mailed letters where it appears that he has applied for disability insurance but lists himself as the employer. The letters are from California's Employment Development Department. Cameron confirmed to KCRA 3 Investigates that he is not disabled, not unemployed, and he hasn't filed a disability claim. A news release sent out by the EDD on Dec. 14, warned people about criminals filing false disability insurance claims. Assemblymember Jim Cooper, (D) Elk Grove, said all of the fraud is "crippling our system." (KCRA3)
- Chief Kathy Lester was sworn in Friday as the 46th Chief of Police for the Sacramento Police Department. A 27-year veteran of the Sacramento Police Department, Lester will be the first woman to hold the position. Lester will be in charge of a department with over 1,100 sworn and civilian employees in her new role. (CBS Sacramento)
- New details were released on Thursday about the arrests of three people facing organized retail theft charges for stealing more than $6,000 in merchandise from around Sacramento and West Sacramento. The West Sacramento Police Department said Thursday that officers determined Hank McGee, 61, Mark Ray, 61, and Satin Bowman, 45, were connected to multiple thefts throughout the area including Home Depot, Lowe's, Safeway, Raley's, Rite Aid and CVS stores. In total, they are believed to be linked to 20 thefts, authorities said. (KCRA3)
- Popular midtown eatery Harry's Café, open for the past 17 years, closed its doors for the last time Friday. Harry's Café, which opened at the end of 2004, mixed traditional Chinese foods, Vietnamese pho, and classic American foods to serve up one of a kind breakfast and lunch dishes. Gathering at the 16th Street business Friday morning, many customers hoped to get one last taste of the over 178 different dishes on the menu. "That's kind of sad," Donald Ashlock, a loyal customer, said upon hearing the news that the café was planning to shutter Friday. "We are losing a lot of good businesses, especially these mom and pop places," he said. (ABC10)
- A Shasta County man was arrested in connection to a fatal shooting that happened along Roosevelt Avenue in south Sacramento this week, authorities said Saturday. Larnell Looney, 38, was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on one count of murder. There are no outstanding suspects. (CBS Sacramento)
