12 Unhoused People Rescued Along San Diego River Amid Rain From Hilary

Tropical Storm Hilary dropped record-setting rain across Southern California on Sunday, including in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO — A dozen unhoused people were rescued Sunday night along the San Diego River as Tropical Storm Hilary pummeled Southern California, according to authorities.

Crews rescued two people from the riverbed near the 4300 block of Pacific Highway, authorities said, and then came to the aid of three people near the south side of the Morena Boulevard Bridge.

Rescuers moved toward an island downstream to provide additional aid, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Emergency responders walked the victims out of the water.

A total of 12 people were rescued between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. No one was injured, but one person needed medical attention. The victims were believed to be houseless, authorities said.

Hilary dropped record-setting rain across Southern California on Sunday. According to the National Weather Service, three climate stations in San Diego received record rainfall for the month of August with Sunday's rain alone: Escondido with 2.66 inches, Vista with 2.12 inches, and Cuyamaca with 4.11 inches.
