13 Scripps Researchers Named 'Most Influential' Around The Globe

A team of scientists from Scripps Research in La Jolla were mentioned in the Clarivate's Highly Cited Researchers list.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A total of 13 Scripps Research scientists across multiple fields were named "Highly Cited Researchers" this year by the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate.

According to that organization, Highly Cited Researchers demonstrate significant and broad influence reflected in their publication of multiple highly cited papers over the past 10 years.

Researchers lauded in 2022 included: Phil Baran, Dennis Burton, Vadim Cherezov, Jean-Philippe Julien, Vsevolod Katritch, Jeong Hyun Lee, Wei Liu, Ardem Patapoutian, William Schief, Eric Topol, Ian Wilson, John Yates and Jin-Quan Yu.

According to a Scripps Research recent news release, almost every one of 2022’s award recipients has been named to the Highly Cited Researchers list in the past. Wilson, Burton, Yu and Baran have all been featured since Clarivate published the first ranking eight years ago. This is Cherezov’s seventh; Schief and Katritch’s sixth; Patapoutian, Yates and Julien’s fifth; Topol’s third; Lee’s second; and Liu’s first time receiving such a designation.

The global award recipients spanned 69 different countries, with the United States representing 38.3%, the greatest amount of highly cited researchers, according to Clarivate head of Research Analysis David Pendlebury.

“The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at Scripps Research who are having a significant impact on the research community as evidenced by the rate at which their work is being cited by their peers,” Pendlebury said in a recent news release. “These individuals are helping to transform human ingenuity into our world’s greatest breakthroughs – and it is an honor to celebrate their achievements.”

Their work at Scripps was in the areas of biology, biochemistry, chemistry, immunology, microbiology, pharmacology and toxicology.

Several of the Scripps Research award recipients were featured under the ‘Cross-Field’ category, highlighting their groundbreaking research that bridges multiple disciplines and departments, according to the release. This includes Jeong Hyun Lee, Wei Liu, Ardem Patapoutian, William Schief, Eric Topol and John Yates.

Researchers Jin-Quan Yu and Phil Baran were named for their foundational work in chemistry, Jean-Philippe Julien was named for his microbiology contributions, and Vadim Cherezov and Vsevolod Katritch were acknowledged for their pharmacology and toxicology research.
