Coronavirus: 341 Cases, 3 Deaths In San Diego County

SAN DIEGO, CA — A third San Diego County resident has died from COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus, while the number of confirmed cases continue to increase in the region.

The victim was an 87-year-old woman, county officials announced Thursday. No further details were released.

A 76-year-old man with significant health issues died earlier this week. Over the weekend, a San Diego man in his early 70s died in Santa Clara County after traveling to Hawaii.

Cases are increasing daily and public health officials don't expect a downturn anytime soon.

In fact, the number of cases in the county reached 341 Thursday, an increase of 64 cases over Wednesday. That's the largest increase since the outbreak began. The number has doubled since Sunday.

Of the people who have tested positive, 69 have been hospitalized, with 31 in intensive care. Three residents have died.

Of the cases, 207 are men and 134 are women. The cases span people ages 6 weeks old to over 80 years old. Most of the cases involve people between 20 to 59 years old.

More than 60% of the cases are in the city of San Diego. Cases have also been confirmed in the cities of Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Del Mar, El Cajon, Encinitas, Escondido, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, National City, Oceanside, Poway, San Marcos, Santee, Solana Beach and Vista, as well as the unincorporated areas of Bonita, Fallbrook, Lakeside, Ramona, Rancho Santa Fe and Spring Valley.

Cases involving non-residents were dropped from the county's table on Thursday to conform with the practices of other health departments across the state. The number of cases connected to the federal quarantine is no longer included in the total.
