California Coronavirus: Live Updates On Cases, Closures, Orders
Here's a roundup of all the COVID-19 developments in California as of March 25.
CALIFORNIA — Several major banks will offer California residents a 90-day grace period for mortgage payments during the new coronavirus outbreak, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday.
The grace period applies to homeowners making mortgage payments to Wells Fargo, Citi Bank, JPMorgan Chase and U.S. Bank, as well as nearly 200 state-chartered banks and credit unions, Newsom said. Bank of America, which Newsom initially said had declined to guarantee the 90-day period, tweeted later Wednesday that it would also allow deferrals.
State legislators praised Newsom and the banks for negotiating the grace period but called for a similar grace period for tenants across the state who pay rent. "This is a major relief for homeowners who have lost their jobs," Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) said. "Now we must provide relief to struggling renters, and that means, at a minimum, an eviction moratorium."

Newsom has already signed an executive order allowing individual jurisdictions to pause rent payments and enact eviction moratoriums for renters, but only some city and county governments have taken that step.
Wiener said he is authoring a statewide eviction moratorium with Assemblyman Phil Ting, D-San Francisco, and he hopes Newsom will sign a similar executive order before tenants statewide pay rent on April 1.

Earlier Wednesday, the U.S. Senate and White House agreed on a $2 trillion stimulus package, capping days of negotiations over how to boost the nation's economy as the new coronavirus crisis threatened to plunge the U.S. into a recession.
The package, if approved by Congress and signed into law by President Trump, will send $1,200 checks directly to taxpayers earning up to $75,000 per year, expand unemployment benefits, provide loans to small businesses and more.
Meanwhile, Newsom on Tuesday moved to halt the intake of new inmates into state prison and juvenile facilities for 30 days, in an effort to avoid spreading the coronavirus within state prisons. Seven COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in four state prisons, among both staff and an inmate.
They are the latest in a whirlwind of measures taken by governments from the local to federal level to stem the COVID-19 outbreak, which has shuttered schools and many businesses, and driven millions of residents into their homes to avoid spreading the highly contagious virus.
There were more than 68,900 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States and 1,041 deaths as of Wednesday afternoon, according to Johns Hopkins University. 67 of those deaths were in California. Only China and Italy currently surpass the U.S. for coronavirus cases.
