SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego Humane Society took in nine more dogs after a Linda Vista tenant was evicted, adding to an ongoing surge of animal intakes that has left the organization struggling with limited kennel space.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Office contacted Humane Law Enforcement officers Tuesday for assistance with the dogs following the eviction, according to San Diego Humane Society.
Because the organization's San Diego campus was at capacity, six of the dogs were transported to the El Cajon campus. The dogs are now in emergency boarding status while the Humane Society investigates the case.
The latest intake comes as San Diego Humane Society continues to see record numbers of animals entering its shelters. Across its four campuses in San Diego, El Cajon, Escondido and Oceanside, 129 companion animals arrived Tuesday, including 78 stray animals and 23 owner surrenders.
The organization previously reported an increase in large-scale dog surrenders and said shelters have been strained by a growing number of animals needing care.
San Diego Humane Society asked residents to help by adopting, fostering or donating. Officials also encouraged owners of lost pets to check shelter listings and reclaim their animals.
To create more space, adoption fees for all pets except horses are 50% off throughout August as part of the national Clear the Shelters campaign. The campaign will end with a fee-waived adoption event Saturday, Aug. 29, for all animals except horses.
San Diego Humane Society shelters are open for walk-in adoptions from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego. Available animals can be viewed online at the organization's website.
