1. 190 San Diego County Students Named National Merit Semifinalists (patch.com) — San Diego County families have big academic news as 190 local high school seniors are named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. seniors. Students from numerous San Diego neighborhoods and nearby cities will now compete for scholarships totaling about $24 million, with finalists announced in February and winners revealed between April and July.
2. Clairemont pool closed since 2024 as San Diego residents wait for answers on reopening (10news.com) — Clairemont residents are still waiting for their neighborhood pool to reopen after a boiler failure shut it down in late 2024, disrupting student water polo and community swim programs across San Diego. City officials say renovations are about 90% complete, with new infrastructure and a boiler installed, and they now expect to reopen the highly used pool in spring 2027 while answering questions at Clairemont Family Day this Saturday.
3. TSA allows non-ticketed passengers past security at 13 airports nationwide, including San Diego Int'l (cbs8.com) — Non-ticketed visitors in San Diego can now use TSA's new Gateside by TSA PreCheck program to go past security at San Diego International Airport, escort loved ones, or enjoy shops and restaurants. You'll need a PreCheck membership, a reservation one to three days ahead, and a valid ID, and the program operates alongside the existing SAN Pass with different booking windows and daily limits.
4. North Park Sustainable Market (kpbs.org) — San Diegans can head to North Park Mini Park this Saturday afternoon for an open-air Sustainable Market packed with food vendors, local crafts, and live DJs. The family- and dog-friendly event runs from noon to 4 p.m., offers gluten-free and vegan options, and features vendors lining North Park Way and 29th Street with nearby street and garage parking.
5. Research Data Analyst 2 (ucsd.edu) — A new part-time Research Data Analyst position is open at UC San Diego's San Diego Supercomputer Center, supporting public health and data science projects in Professor Tim Mackey's lab. Local applicants with data analysis and programming skills can apply by September 23, with special timelines for UCSD layoff and reassignment candidates. The role focuses on statistical, computational, and visualization work for health-related research grants.
