SAN DIEGO, CA — A man convicted of gunning down a homeless man in Linda Vista was sentenced Wednesday to 35 years to life in state prison.

Eduardo Vazquez, 28, was convicted of first-degree murder for the July 24, 2022, killing of 41-year-old Johnny Ramirez. He was found shot in the back just after 5 a.m. in the 2200 block of Ulric Street and died at the scene.

Vazquez and his co-defendant, Arturo Diaz, were not arrested until more than a year after the homicide. Prosecutors allege the defendants were gang members and that Ramirez's killing was gang-motivated.

Diaz, 28, also went on trial for the homicide, but jurors could not reach verdicts in his case. He later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 19 years in state prison.
