200-Acre Eclipse Fire In Campo 10% Contained, Evacuations Lifted

The fire had spread 200 acres and threatened about 20 homes along with a nearby naval training center in San Diego's East County.

CAMPO, CA – A rapidly-spreading fire that scorched 200 acres in the southeastern reaches of San Diego County Monday threatened back-country homes and a naval training center for several hours, but caused no reported structural damage or injuries.

The blaze, called the Eclipse Fire, broke out around 2 p.m. near the intersection of La Posta Road and State Route 94 in Campo, Cal Fire Capt. Issac Sanchez said.

As the flames spread amid gusty winds, low humidity levels and temperatures in the upper 80s, authorities evacuated about 20 homes and nearby Mountain Warfare Training Camp Michael Monsoor, according to fire officials. A temporary shelter for evacuees was established at Mountain Empire High School in Pine Valley.

The blaze also prompted the California Highway Patrol to close La Posta Road between SR-94 and Old Highway 80. Ground crews and personnel aboard air tankers and water-dropping helicopters halted forward progress of the fire as of 5:30 p.m., Sanchez said.

The blaze was 10 percent contained, according to Cal Fire. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
