Barona Powwow To Celebrate Native American Culture Over Labor Day Weekend

The free three-day event will feature traditional dancing, music, food and vendors.

BARONA, CA — The Barona Band of Mission Indians will host its 54th annual Barona Powwow over Labor Day weekend, featuring three days of Native American dancing, music, food, arts and crafts.

The free event begins Sept. 4 at the Barona Sports Complex on the Barona Indian Reservation in Lakeside. Gourd dancing will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the grand entry of dancers in traditional regalia at 8 p.m.

The powwow will continue from 1 to 11 p.m. Sept. 5-6. Free admission and parking will be available throughout the event.

Hundreds of Native American dancers from across the country are expected to participate, showcasing traditional and contemporary styles including Fancy Shawl Dance and Grass Dance.

The event also will feature hand drum contests, singing and drumming, along with food such as Indian fry bread tacos. Vendors will sell handmade jewelry, arts and crafts.

The Barona Sports Complex is about one mile north of Barona Resort & Casino along Wildcat Canyon Road.
