Join scholar Jennifer Stern for an illuminating online talk about Yehuda Pen, the pioneering Jewish artist who became Marc Chagall's first art teacher in Vitebsk, Russia. Trained at the St. Petersburg Art Academy, Pen was the first Russian artist to combine traditional techniques with openly Jewish subject matter drawn from the daily lives of ordinary Jews, effectively inventing "Jewish fine art" in Russia.
His influence shaped a generation of avant-garde artists, including Chagall, El Lissitzky, and Solomon Yudovin, who embraced modernism in a distinctively Jewish way. Come learn about Pen himself and the famous students he inspired.
