City Council Remembers Victims of Coronado Bridge Crash

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego City Council adjourned Monday's meeting in memory of the four people who died when a truck vaulted off an elevated freeway connector to the Coronado Bridge and landed on a group of people in a park in Barrio Logan.

"Throughout the day, hundreds of people had been visiting Chicano Park, celebrating the La Raza Run -- a motorcycle festival that has live music, food, art exhibits and a tribute to fallen riders," said Councilman David Alvarez, who represents the area.

"The crash scene has now become a growing memorial, with an outpouring of support for the victims and their families."

The victims were identified as Annamarie Contreras, 50, and Cruz Contreras, 52, a married couple from Chandler, Arizona, along with Hacienda Heights residents Andre Banks, 49, and Francine Jimenez, 45. All four were pronounced dead at the scene.

"Condolences go out to victim's families and their loved ones, and our thoughts and prayers are with those who were injured and impacted -- those who were on the scene," Alvarez said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for donations to the Contreras family at https://www.gofundme.com/chicano-park-contreras-family-fund-2umbpgk, Alvarez said.

The account has a goal of $30,000 to cover funeral expenses. Nearly $8,900 had been raised by late Monday.
