Donate Blood In San Diego County, Get A Free Haircut

SAN DIEGO — The American Red Cross is encouraging eligible donors to donate blood in September in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

The National Cancer Institute estimated that more than 15,000 children and adolescents in the U.S. would be diagnosed with cancer last year.

Childhood cancer patients may need blood products on a regular basis during chemotherapy, surgery or treatment for complications, according to the Red Cross. Blood and platelet transfusions can help young patients fight and survive cancer.

Currently, platelet donors and blood donors of all blood types are "urgently needed" to replenish the blood supply following a summer blood shortage, according to the Red Cross.

People who donate Sept. 1-30 will receive a free haircut coupon from Sport Clips Haircuts. The coupon will be emailed and is good through Nov. 11, according to the Red Cross.

To schedule an appointment to donate, use the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org/sport-clips or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire are encouraged to help reduce the time it takes to donate.

What to know about giving blood

Interested in donating? Download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) for more information or to make an appointment.

A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive.
