SAN DIEGO, CA — This year was one of the toughest year's in San Diego Humane Society's history, according to the nonprofit.

The organization has a record of 757 dogs in care, there has been a 20 percent increase in lost pets not retrieved by their owners, and the shelter has operated above 150 percent capacity the entire year.

That's why San Diego Humane Society is asking for the community's support this Giving Tuesday. Thanks to a $50,000 match by The JEM Project, donations received by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday will be doubled to make twice the impact, according to San Diego Humane Society.

"We are there for the animals who count on us, but this year, more than ever, we need the community's help," said Brian Daugherty, executive vice president of San Diego Humane Society. "Running an animal shelter differs from a for-profit business. The shelter business model essentially operates at a deficit with each additional animal served."
