SAN DIEGO, CA — A 74-year-old man ran a red light Thursday and died in a broadside collision at a University City-area intersection.

The man went through a red light at Eastgate Mall and Towne Center Drive about 9:15 a.m., crashing his westbound Mitsubishi SUV into a northbound Honda Accord, according to the San Diego Fire Department.

The impact caused the SUV to overturn and slide into a traffic signal pole, SDPD Officer David O'Brien said. The driver, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.
