Earthquake Swarm Rattles Southern California

The swarm of quakes struck in the Brawley area​ of Imperial County​, east of San Diego.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Dozens of small earthquakes rattled Southern California over the weekend.

The swarm of quakes struck Saturday in the Brawley area of Imperial County, east of San Diego.

By 11 a.m. Saturday, Southern California Seismic Network recorded 128 "events" in the swarm, with the smallest being a 0.9-magnitude quake.

The largest earthquake was a 3.9-magnitude quake, which struck at 4:05 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake activated the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System, which estimated the quake at magnitude 4.0.

"More activity is expected in the next few days," Southern California Seismic Network wrote. "Swarm activity in Southern California can continue for hours, days, weeks, months or years."

Nearby, a 4.1-magnitude quake was reported at 5:17 a.m. Monday about 11 miles southeast of Ocotillo Wells, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The unincorporated community in San Diego County is 3 miles west of the Imperial County line.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.
