Escaped Inmate From Reentry Program Captured In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA — Authorities have captured an inmate who escaped while on a sanctioned outing to a senior care center in San Diego County.
On Tuesday, Rosario Castro, 40, left the Chula Vista care facility, where he was visiting on an approved community pass, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The facility was at the corner of Broadway and Sierra Way in Chula Vista, CDCR spokesperson Todd Javernick told Patch.
Special agents took Castro into custody without incident around 1:40 p.m. Wednesday in San Diego. He was taken to Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. The case will be referred to the San Diego County District Attorney for consideration of escape charges, according to CDCR.

Castro, who was sentenced in February 2020 in San Diego County, is serving four years for carjacking and vehicle theft, according to CDCR. He was being housed at a Male Community Reentry Program facility on Boston Avenuein San Diego, Javernick said. The program allows eligible inmates with two years or less remaining of their prison sentence to serve the end of their sentence in the community.
