Gas Leak Forces Evacuations, Road Closures In Mission Valley ​

SAN DIEGO — A construction accident near the Hazard Center shopping center resulted Thursday in a natural gas leak that led to evacuations and road closures.

The flammable fumes began spewing from a broken pipeline at a work site in the 1500 block of Frazee Road in Mission Valley about 10:15 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Authorities cleared everyone out of the nearby headquarters of the San Diego Community College Police Department while utility personnel worked to halt the flow of the escaping fumes, SDFRD spokesman Jose Ysea said.

San Diego police also shut down Murray Canyon Road and two blocks of Frazee, and advised motorists to avoid the area through the afternoon if possible.

The gas leak was ongoing at midday, Ysea said. About a half-hour later, SDPD officials advised that the ruptured pipeline had been deactivated and the affected stretches of roadway reopened.

There were no reports of anyone suffering any ill effects due to the vapors wafting through the busy commercial district near Friars Road and state Route 163.
