George's At The Cove To Reopen Remodeled Ocean Terrace
The iconic rooftop dining area and bar has been closed for three months for remodeling.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A popular La Jolla restaurant is reopening its iconic rooftop space after a months-long closure.
George's at the Cove will reopen its Ocean Terrace rooftop dining area and bar on Feb. 6 following a three-month closure for remodeling. Guests will be seated on a first-come, first-serve basis on Feb. Reservations will be available beginning Feb. 7.
"Much like the renovations of two baseball cathedrals in Fenway Park and Wrigley Field in recent years, our improvements are meant to be mostly seamless to blend in with what we already had," said Trey Foshee, executive chef and partner of George's at the Cove.

The renovated Ocean Terrace includes a new foundation and flooring, a new 4-foot-tall perimeter glass wall, new umbrella plan with LED lighting, new permanent heaters, new wall sconces, new dining tables, and a new host stand. The main dining area still seats 120 guests.
"You just don't mess with something magical," Foshee said. "While the price tag of our remodel eclipsed the seven-figure mark, guests may not even notice everything. And that's OK, especially with that million-dollar view of the water they enjoy that has never changed."

George's at the Cove was founded in 1984 by George Hauer. The eatery at 1250 Prospect St. originally occupied the first and second levels of the building. The rooftop Ocean Terrace opened in 1991 to create a three-level ocean view dining destination.
George's also completed a remodel of its second-level dining area and bar last April. The covered but open-air space has a new roof with five retractable awnings, new high-top counter with eight seats, new dining tables, new or reupholstered furnishings, and new light fixtures.
Hauer ran the restaurant for the first 16 years until Foshee was brought on as executive chef and partner, shortly after he received Food & Wine magazine's Best New Chef honors in 1998. The kitchen team is now led by Foshee, Executive Chef Masa Kojima and Pastry Chef Zach Schneider working alongside General Manager Mike Grave.
"It's been an incredible ride for more than 41 years, and we hope our investment ensures that the restaurant will remain a go-to spot for the next several decades," Hauer said. "We always want to provide a special place for both locals and visitors to our great city."
