SAN DIEGO, CA — Authorities were searching for an inmate who escaped while on a sanctioned outing to a senior care center Tuesday in San Diego County.
Rosario Castro, 40, was last seen shortly after 11 a.m. at a care facility at the corner of Broadway and Sierra Way in Chula Vista, according to Todd Javernick, spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He was visiting on an approved community pass.
Castro, who was sentenced in February 2020 in San Diego County, is serving four years for carjacking and vehicle theft, according to CDCR. He was being housed at a Male Community Reentry Program facility on Boston Avenue in San Diego, Javernick told Patch. The program allows eligible inmates with two years or less remaining of their prison sentence to serve the end of their sentence in the community.
