Police urged the public to avoid the Clairemont Mesa mosque, where three people were killed in a shooting in May.

SAN DIEGO, CA — The Islamic Center of San Diego was placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon as police responded to the mosque, authorities said.

The San Diego Police Department said the lockdown was issued "out of an abundance of caution," but officials did not immediately disclose what prompted the security measures.

Officers were stationed at the Islamic Center on Eckstrom Avenue to ensure public safety, police said. The public was urged to avoid the area.

The Clairemont Mesa mosque was the site of a deadly shooting on May 18 that left five people dead, including two teenage gunmen.

Police said the attackers killed a security guard and two members of the congregation before fleeing and fatally shooting themselves nearby. Investigators found writings expressing hatred toward various religions and races in the suspects' vehicle.

In August, a 17-year-old North Carolina girl was arrested and indicted on three counts of murder in connection with the attack. Prosecutors allege she had agreed to livestream the shooting.

Police have not said whether Tuesday's lockdown is connected to the May attack.
