Little Blue Penguins Celebrate First Anniversary At Birch Aquarium

Birch Aquarium at Scripps celebrated the occasion with a pool party complete with bubbles, fish "cakes" and beach balls.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Some of the world's smallest penguins have called Birch Aquarium home for a year.

Birch Aquarium at Scripps on Wednesday celebrated the first anniversary of Beyster Family Little Blue Penguins with a pool party complete with bubbles, fish "cakes" and beach balls.

The exhibit opened on July 12, 2022 and was the biggest addition to Birch Aquarium in 30 years. It is also the only exhibit to feature little blue penguins in the western United States.

The penguins are less than 12 inches tall and weigh only 2 to 3 pounds. They are known for their slate-blue plumage.

Visitors from across the country have enjoyed seeing the world's smallest penguins in person, according to Birch Aquarium, including fan favorites Azulito, Cornelius, Nero, Persimmon (also known as Percy) and Reka.
