Man Arrested In Death Of Toddler In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA — A man was arrested on suspicion of murder in the death of a toddler in San Diego, authorities said Tuesday.
Police received a call at 2:40 p.m. Monday about a boy not breathing at a home in the 2900 block of Morton Way in the Bay Terraces neighborhood, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Officers responded and began lifesaving efforts, police Lt. Jud Campbell said. Medics took the child to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The boy was almost 2 years old. His name was not released.

"During the preliminary investigation, it was determined the child had sustained serious traumatic internal injuries that were indicative of physical child abuse," Campbell said in a news release. "Detectives from the San Diego Police Department Child Abuse Unit began an investigation into determining who was responsible for the care and custody of the infant and how he sustained his injuries."
Based on the Child Abuse Unit's initial investigation and the severity of the injuries to the boy, the department's Homicide Unit responded to investigate the death, Campbell said.

Homicide detectives determined that McArvin Caringal-Sanchez caused the injuries to the child, Campbell said. The 20-year-old man was dating the boy's mother.
Caringal-Sanchez was arrested and booked into San Diego County Jail on suspicion of murder.
