More Shelter Pets Coming To San Diego Due To Hurricane Harvey

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA – More than 100 cats and dogs are scheduled to arrive Tuesday in San Diego County from shelters in areas stricken by Hurricane Harvey.

This is the second time Wings of Rescue is flying a planeload of pets to San Diego to clear out shelter space for animals orphaned during the storm. A total of 105 animals arrived here last week from Acadiana Animal Aid in Lafayette, Louisiana. The second flight is expected to bring 130 pets to San Diego from the Louisiana shelter.

The 45 cats and 85 dogs boarded their flight Tuesday morning. After a stop in Texas to re-fuel, the plane is scheduled to arrive around 1 p.m. at Gillespie Field in El Cajon.

The animals arriving in San Diego were already in shelters when the storm struck and did not have owners searching for them. They will go to Labradors and Friends Rescue, Rancho Coastal Humane Society and San Diego Humane Society.

"Once the pets are here and safe, we will begin working with some of the rescues to help find homes for the new arrivals," said John Van Zante of Rancho Coastal Humane Society.

The transfer of the pets is part of a joint effort by Wings of Rescue, GreaterGood.org, Labradors and Friends Rescue, Rancho Coastal Humane Society and San Diego Humane Society.

All five organizations are seeking donations to help cover the costs of the flight and to provide care for the animals. Additionally, Labradors and Friends and Rancho Coastal Humane Society need foster care providers for the pets.

Wings of Rescue needs gently used, medium to large, plastic pet crates, even if the crates are missing their bolts. Crates can be dropped off at Rancho Coastal Humane Society or the three San Diego Humane Society shelters in Mission Valley, Oceanside or Escondido.
