Mountain View-Area Police Standoff Ends With Suspect In Custody

SAN DIEGO, CA — A Mountain View man who allegedly threatened neighbors with a gun over the weekend and then fired on responding officers, causing no injuries, was arrested Monday following a 30-hour police standoff.

The drama in the 4500 block of T Street began shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday, when several 911 callers reported that a neighbor, 68-year-old Reginald Smith, allegedly had fired a shot while waving a pistol around and threatening to kill them, according to the San Diego Police Department.

When patrol personnel arrived, the suspect allegedly fired at least one round in their direction and holed up in his house.

Police asked residents in the immediate area to remain in their homes while crisis counselors tried to convince Smith to surrender peaceably. After he refused to do so for several hours, a SWAT team was called in, police said.

The stalemate continued through the day and overnight, and was ongoing through mid-afternoon Monday.

Finally, about 2:45 p.m., the special weapons and tactics personnel forced entry to Smith's home and took him into custody with help from a service dog, SDPD Lt. Adam Sharki said.
