SAN DIEGO, CA — Nearly seven weeks after rescuing more than 700 neglected animals from the Villa Chardonnay property in Julian, San Diego Humane Society said it continues to care for over 100 horses while working to place the remaining animals.

At the height of the response, the organization cared for 728 animals including horses, cats, dogs and livestock. As of Wednesday, 107 horses remain at the Julian property, where staff and volunteers provide daily medical treatment, nutrition and rehabilitation.

"Our team has made incredible progress, but the work isn't finished," Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society, said in a statement. "Many of these horses are seniors with significant medical needs, and they deserve the time, attention and resources necessary to help them recover and move on to brighter futures."

Recent care has included dental work, hoof care, diagnostic testing and treatment for chronic conditions. About half of the remaining horses have received dental and farrier care, with additional treatments planned in the coming weeks.

San Diego Humane Society is also managing a precautionary quarantine after a horse that left the property tested positive for equine Sstrangles, a contagious bacterial disease. Officials said 11 horses tested so far have had negative results.

Meanwhile, placement efforts for the rescued cats are nearing completion. Of the 446 cats rescued from the property, along with two kittens born afterward, 305 have been adopted and 84 have been transferred to partner organizations. Eleven cats remain in care.

The number of rescued dogs also has declined through adoptions, transfers and reunifications. Of 30 dogs rescued from the property, 14 remain in care.

All farm animals rescued from the site have been placed, including alpacas and a miniature pony, officials said.

The organization said it remains committed to caring for the animals until permanent placements are found.
