Pioneer San Diego Smartphone Film Festival Turns 10!

The pioneer International Mobile Film Festival, where all films are shot with smartphones, is serving its 10th Anniversary edition to the entire San Diego community online this year!

How can it be that 13 years ago, founder Susy Botello launched the idea that you could make movies using mobile phone cameras for the big screen? Have you heard about this film festival yet?

No big ads are promoting it, but an entire global community of smartphone video and film makers has embraced it and knows of it. In fact, they've been coming to San Diego each year since 2012, during the last weekend each April, to celebrate it. Filmmakers or as I call them, storytellers with smartphone filmmaking skills, have come to this annual event in San Diego from as far as New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Italy, Germany and other countries; and as close as Canada, Chile, New York, and L.A. to just name a few. Why?

We'll let them answer that...but the reviews are in! The festival is an innovative and unique event in a traditional format.

The films play on a big screen, there are Q&A presentations and panels, smartphone filmmaking workshops, and many networking opportunities...but the traditional red carpet, which has always been a show, has turned into an Extravaganza!

The featured programs are unique, such as Community Stories, where the filmmaker is required to share the story from within the community or culture they are producing.

Of course, all the videos and films are shot using smartphone cameras but they can be edited on any computer or tablet. The audio can be captured externally. And you can use traditional film production gear.

There are no official categories, but there are suggestive categories, such as: Youth Films, Ultimate Mobile (all done on the phone), Mobile Journalism and Current Events, and more.

This year's film festival theme is "Your Story."
