San Diego Firefighters To Demonstrate Dangers Of Fireworks

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department's Bomb Squad will hold a demonstration Monday on the dangers of fireworks.

The demonstration, which is only open to members of the media, will include a controlled detonation of fireworks to show their potency in advance of the Fourth of July holiday. Fireworks are illegal countywide, including the city of San Diego, except in the case of permitted events like the Big Bay Boom fireworks show.

"The Fourth of July holiday is for celebrations and fun," said SDFD Chief Colin Stowell. "Our goal is to educate members of our community to the dangers of fireworks. This demonstration shows how powerful even small fireworks can be."

According to the Fire-Rescue Department, residents should also use caution around barbecues and fire pits, which often cause burns and other serious injuries. Residents can find more tips on fire prevention and safety at sandiego.gov/fire/safety/tips.
