San Diego Humane Society Welcomes 20 Dogs From Overcrowded Imperial County Shelter

The dogs will be spayed or neutered, as well as undergo medical and behavioral evaluations before becoming available for adoption.

SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego Humane Society welcomed 20 small and medium-sized dogs from the Humane Society of Imperial County, as part of a partnership to help ease severe overcrowding in the Imperial Valley shelter.

The dogs arrived Friday, with 16 being cared for at the organization's San Diego campus and four at the El Cajon campus. San Diego Humane Society already had 672 dogs in its care.

"It takes a village in animal welfare, and we are committed to working together to save lives," said Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society.

"All of us are facing the enormous challenge of caring for so many dogs right now. By bringing these 20 dogs into our care, we are helping relieve some of the immense pressure on our partners in Imperial Valley while connecting these pets with a community ready to open their homes to them."

The dogs will be spayed or neutered, as well as undergo medical and behavioral evaluations before becoming available for adoption, officials said.
