Today it is regarding Verizon trying to get a new 35 foot tall MEGA cell tower and a 20’ x 9’ block and mortar equipment building enclosure in Ridgewood Neighborhood Park, a dedicated park in Rancho Penasquitos, bordering the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve. The installation is to be placed in prime area of the park where lots of little children play daily, rendering usable park space no longer usable, in addition to being right in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

If this tower is allowed, it will set precedent for Verizon and other phone carriers to bring more towers in any parks in the City of San Diego.
The residents of Ridgewood Neighborhood Park have been fighting against this installation for over 2 years now, and in spite of resident protests at every level of the approval process, the city has approved the installation, this violates the City Charter and is contrary to all intended park purposes. Section 55 of the San Diego City Charter clearly states that Ridgewood Park and other dedicated parklands may not be used for non-park purposes without a 2/3 vote of the people.
There was no vote held!
For most of us, the health of our children and the health of all living in close proximity is the first concern we have regarding this, but unfortunately the FCC states that Cell Towers cannot be denied based on health concerns.
However, many organizations, both public and private, cities, and school districts have banned cellular installations this close to people for health reasons.

No one really knows the exact repercussion of such cell towers in close proximity on human beings; less on children and the American Association of Pediatrics have expressed their clear concern on the subject. So why take the risk when phone carriers can find many other sites more appropriate for their cell towers?
§ This kind of commercial use of our park land should not be happening anywhere in our City. This is illegal and it is wrong.
§ The bulk and scale of the project are incompatible with the park and neighborhood.
§ Our City Charter prohibits this kind of commercial use of City park land.
§ Our City is not allowed to lease our park land for non-park purposes without a vote of the people.
§ Our parks are for recreation, not for rent.
Thanks so much for your consideration!
