Suspicious Package Prompts San Diego City Hall Evacuation

SAN DIEGO, CA – A suspicious-looking package found near a downtown San Diego intersection Monday morning prompted a brief evacuation of City Hall, but ultimately was determined to be harmless, authorities said.

A bomb squad responded around 8:25 a.m. after police officers found the item near the intersection of Third Avenue and B Street, San Diego Fire- Rescue Department spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.

Officers evacuated City Hall, at 202 C St. while the bomb squad used an X-ray scanner to examine the package, San Diego police public-affairs Officer Billy Hernandez said. It was not immediately clear what it turned out to be or how the bomb squad personnel dealt with it.

The area near the intersection of Third Avenue and B Street was reopened by 9:35 a.m. and people were allowed to return to City Hall.

A man was detained for questioning near the scene, but it was not immediately clear if he was ultimately arrested, Hernandez said.
