SAN DIEGO — A train struck and killed a pedestrian at Old Town Transit Station Thursday, authorities reported.

The victim, described only as male, was apparently trying to cross the tracks at the depot in the 4000 block of Taylor Street about 11:30 a.m., when the southbound Amtrak train hit him, according to sheriff's officials. He died at the scene, San Diego County sheriff's Deputy Tyler Eikermann said.

At the time of the fatality, warning lights and bells along the rails were activated due to the approaching train, Eikermann said.
