SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A driver is accused of running over and killing a 74-year-old man following a brief disagreement in San Francisco on Monday afternoon.
Valantino Cash Amil, 30, has been charged with one count each of murder, along with the allegation that he used the car as a deadly weapon during the crime, and with leaving the scene of the crash, according to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office.
Amil had just finished getting gas sometime after 3 p.m. at a Chevron in the 1600 block of Mission Street and headed towards the exit, prosecutors said.
As he slowly merged into traffic on Mission Street, his car partially blocked the sidewalk, prosecutors said.
The 74-year-old man, who has yet to be publicly identified, was walking on the sidewalk and took exception to Amil's car being in the way, prosecutors said.
Amil and the man briefly exchanged words as the man walked around the front of the car. That's when the man poured water onto the hood of the car, prosecutors said.
In response, Amil accelerated into the 74-year-old man, knocking him off his feet and onto the windshield of his car, prosecutors said.
Amil drove several feet before breaking, causing the man to slide off the hood of the car. Amil then ran the man over and continued driving off, prosecutors said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene less than 10 minutes later. Amil, meanwhile, was located shortly after and taken into custody by officers in connection with the fatal crash.
Amil is expected to appear in court on Thursday afternoon. Prosecutors say they will move to keep him jailed without bail, claiming he poses a risk to the public.
