Weather forecast:
1. Police Warn Of Jewelry Robbery Schemes Across Bay Area (patch.com) — San Francisco police are warning residents, especially seniors, about a jewelry theft scheme in which suspects use fake “gift” necklaces to distract and steal real jewelry, including a recent robbery near 17th Street and Cabrillo Avenue. Officers arrested two suspects after a chase involving spike strips and recovered jewelry, cash and decoy items, while urging anyone approached by strangers offering gifts to back away and call police immediately.
2. These Mysterious Creatures Are Washing Up On SF's Beaches. Here's What To Know (patch.com) — Beachgoers in San Francisco are spotting masses of blue, sail-topped Velella velella washing up at Ocean Beach, Baker Beach and other local shores, often mistaken for jellyfish. Experts explain these “by-the-wind sailors” are largely harmless to humans, though their mild sting can irritate skin, and winds occasionally drive huge numbers of them onto the city’s coastline.
3. Massive Sea Lion 'Chonkers' At SF's Pier 39 Is A Viral Sensation (patch.com) — Visitors to San Francisco’s Pier 39 are flocking to see a massive Steller sea lion nicknamed “Chonkers,” whose size and antics have turned it into a viral sensation. Experts say the unusually large visitor likely arrived in March following abundant local food, and videos show it heaving onto a platform and accidentally tipping smaller sea lions back into the water. The spectacle has captivated crowds and social media users alike.
4. San Francisco Is Launching A Massive Free Street Festival Series Next Weekend — Starting With K-Pop DJs And Incredible Local Food (secretsanfrancisco.com) — San Francisco’s Tenderloin is rolling out a free “Live on Larkin” street festival series starting May 9 on Larkin Street, spotlighting local food and culture. The kickoff AAPI Heritage Month Block Party will feature K-pop DJs, performances, and family-friendly activities, with additional themed festivals scheduled monthly through December 2026.
5. Prosecutors decline to bring charges against Baltimore officers linked to California criminal investigation (wmar2news.com) — San Francisco prosecutors have decided not to charge four Baltimore police officers in a California criminal investigation, citing insufficient evidence to meet the burden of proof. The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office says the case could be revisited if new evidence emerges, while Baltimore’s internal affairs probe of the officers continues with their police powers still suspended.
