San Luis Obispo, California Patch AM: a 5 min read

Hi San Luis Obispo! We have the latest buzz right here. Let's keep you in the loop and get this morning started right! ☀️

In today's newsletter:

  • What could a censure mean for San Luis Obispo’s mayor Monday?
  • Could a new desal plant change your water future in SLO County?
  • Will new Coastal Commission deadlines finally speed up SLO County projects?

Today's riddle: What kind of shoes do frogs wear? 🤔 (Answer below!)

Weather forecast:

  • Saturday: Clouds, then sun, with a high of 81 and low of 56 degrees.
  • Sunday: Areas of fog, then sun, temps: high: 83, low: 57.
  • Monday: A steady afternoon breeze, with a high of 85 and low of 55 degrees.

📰 News we're reading

1. SLO councilmember requests censure hearing after mayor leaked Grand Jury report (sanluisobispo.com) — San Luis Obispo Mayor Erica Stewart faces a possible public censure after admitting she improperly shared a confidential grand jury report with a Cal Poly official, prompting a formal complaint from Councilmember Jan Marx. A Personnel Board hearing Monday at City Hall will decide whether to recommend a full City Council censure hearing, where members could finally debate how to respond to the leak.

2. SLO County releases new study comparing desalination plant locations (kcbx.org) — San Luis Obispo County is weighing five possible desalination plant sites along its coastline, from Cambria and San Simeon down to the Morro Bay, Cayucos, Oceano and Nipomo areas. Officials say the costly, complex projects could bolster drought-resistant water supplies, and the feasibility study is open for public comment through August 7 before heading to advisory committees and the Board of Supervisors.

3. Will new Coastal Commission appeal law help coastal SLO County building woes? (sanluisobispo.com) — A new state law championed by Central Coast Sen. John Laird will cap how long California Coastal Commission appeals can delay projects in San Luis Obispo County’s coastal areas. For homeowners and builders in places like Pismo Beach, that means clearer deadlines, potentially lower costs, and a more predictable path for seawall repairs and other bluffside construction starting next year.

4. Military scam alerts, $684 million in losses in 2025 (ksby.com) — San Luis Obispo County’s Veterans Services Office is warning local veterans about aggressive “claim shark” scams that helped drive $684 million in military-related fraud losses nationwide last year. Officer Morgan Boyd urges residents to seek free, accredited help through his office or the VA, and to report suspicious offers or possible identity theft quickly to banks and federal resources.

5. Teen went to a party and hasn't been seen or heard from in 30 years (amedpost.com) — Thirty years after Cal Poly student Kristin Smart vanished after a party in San Luis Obispo, her remains still haven’t been found despite a murder conviction. The piece revisits her disappearance from campus, the long investigation, and the eventual trial of Paul Flores, while reflecting on how the case continues to haunt people connected to the university.
