Bicycle Thefts on the Rise in Central Marin, Police Say

The Central Marin Police Authority offers bicycle theft prevention advice, such as registering bicycles with police.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — With more than 50 bicycles stolen within Central Marin Police Authority's jurisdiction during the first six months of this year, police on Thursday offered advice on bicycle theft prevention.

The CMPA acknowledges bicycle theft as a persistent problem that is on the rise in its communities. Over half of the bikes stolen this year were high-end, high-dollar equipment, taken from residences or off private property, according to a police statement.

Oftentimes, police said, bikes become easy to steal when they are left unsecured in carports, garages or yards. CMPA says its efforts to deter such crimes include conducting enforcement operations using "bait bikes." Bicycle owners can also help law enforcement combat the growing problem by taking steps to protect their property.

Police say the best way to prevent bike theft is to use a good lock and secure it to a fixed object, even when parked in a home garage. In the event one's bicycle is taken, police say the most important thing is to have the serial number, description and a photo available. The serial number enables police to enter the bike into the state’s law enforcement stolen property system.

CMPA also offered the following bike theft prevention tips:

  • Consider avoiding cable locks, they can be quickly and easily cut. Invest in a good quality U-Lock and lock both the frame and one wheel.
  • Always lock your bike to a secure, fixed object.
  • Don’t leave your bike unlocked and unattended, whether in your yard, on your porch or deck, or in your car or truck.
  • If your bike has easily removable pieces (lights, bags, quick release seat post, etc.) take them with you.

CMPA offers bicycle registration at both its stations in San Anselmo and Larkspur during business hours.

Additionally, a bike identification form is available CMPA's website under "Forms." Bike owners can print the form, fill it out, attach a picture and store it in a safe place.

More information about bicycle registration can be found on the CMPA website.
