The cultures of ancient Greece and Rome left the world with a treasure trove of stories and legends. These are timeless tales filled with all-powerful gods like Venus and Apollo, fearless heroes like Hercules, as well as mighty Amazon warriors and deadly monsters. Today we refer to this lore as classical mythology.
Join us on Tuesday, October 13 at 12pm when docent Mike Madrid will share how these myths inspired artists for thousands of years and are brought to life within the collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

As a writing project grows, the challenge is no longer simply getting words onto the page. The challenge is keeping the work accurate, coherent, recognizable, and faithful to what you intended to say.
Join us on Thursday, October 15 at 11am when Bridget Burke explains how to step into the role of creative director and editor. You will learn how to guide a longer project, protect your writing style, compare versions, organize feedback, keep track of important decisions, check facts and privacy, and prevent repeated revisions from carrying the work away from its original purpose.
By the end of the class, you will have a practical editorial system for managing larger writing projects and a clearer sense of when a piece needs another revision and when it is finally time to put down the pen.

Matt Rupert (b. 1984) premiere: Other Worlds
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major. Jim Stopher, piano
From its revolutionary opening bars, Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto breaks the mold for soloistic expressivity. Composed in 1805-06 and publicly premiered in 1808, it became Beethoven's final performance as a piano soloist, as his increasing deafness drew him out of the spotlight. Soloist Jim Stopher said, "Beethoven's G Major concerto is a stunning combination of virtuosity and vigor on the one hand, and lyrical intimacy on the other. It strikes me as Beethoven's most personal and deeply felt concerto."
Jim Stopher is enthusiastic about bringing music to residents of Marin County, both through his work at the College of Marin and with initiatives in community organizations including the Marin Philosophical Society, San Rafael Algebra Academy, Chamber Musicians of Northern California, and solo concerto appearances with the Mill Valley Philharmonic, the Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the Lucas Valley Chamber Orchestra.
Taking Gustav Holst's The Planets (1914-17) as inspiration, Other Worlds, by San Francisco composer Matt Rupert, goes beyond the concept of setting the original eight known planets to music. It taps into the mythological and scientific features of more recently discovered exterrestrial bodies. Other Worlds is scored for chamber orchestra with electric guitar and enhanced percussion and will be performed with visual projections by Damon Mahoney.
Daniel Canosa will conduct. Artist's reception to follow. The church has designated accessible parking and all event areas are wheelchair accessible. ECHO website: echorchestra.com/ Info:
