Compensation For Bay Area Workers Up Since Last Year

The region had the highest percentage increase in wages across the country, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

BAY AREA, CA – Total compensation for private workers in the Bay Area and surrounding region increased 4.4 percent in March compared to the same time a year earlier, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday.

The national average for total compensation, considered as wages plus benefits, for the same time period was 2.8 percent.

Regional wages alone increased 4.9 percent compared to a national average of 2.9 percent, according to the department. Total compensation has gone up an average of 3 percent annually in the region since 2014.

The statistics for what was deemed the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland metropolitan area covered the nine-county Bay Area plus Santa Cruz, San Joaquin and San Benito counties.

The region had the highest percentage increase in wages across the country, coming in second for total compensation after Seattle, which saw a 7.2 percent increase.
