DISTRICT-WIDE SCHOOL OF CHOICE TO GIVE CHARTER SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS

August 28, 2014, FAIRFAX, CA – The Multi-Age Program (MAP), an 18-year old district-wide alternative program of choice for students in grades K through 5 based on inquiry, experiential learning and collaboration will submit a charter school petition to the Ross Valley School District for review in mid-September. The petition is being spearheaded by all six current MAP teachers and volunteer parents. If approved, the new school would open for the 2015 - 2016 school year. It would be a tuition-free public school option open to all K-5 students in Ross Valley School District and from other school districts as space allows.

Two public informational presentations about the program and the charter proposal will be held at the following times:

9 / 3: Fairfax Community Church, 2398 Sir Francis Drake - Wed. (6:30 - 7:30)
9/ 6: Isabel Cook Com. Ctr., San Anselmo (w/ Spanish available) - Sat.(4:00-5:00)

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are being implemented in all California public schools over the next few years. According to the California Department of Education, the CCSS are designed to “help build creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration, and communication.” MAP has been focused on these outcomes since its inception and has continued to evolve how it does this. The school will offer students and parents:

• Mixed-age classrooms embracing a wide range of learning styles and developmental rates

• A learning community where parents, teachers and administrators are partners and co-creators of the program as it evolves

• A Parent liaison to provide support to families of English language learners or other families
• Visual and performing arts integrated into the classroom experience
• A Whole-child approach to social and emotional development

MAP has had a wait list for enrollment for many years, and the Ross Valley School District has slowly expanded th! e MAP program’s capacity to meet some of this demand. If a charter is approved, it would allow the program to grow over the next five years from six classes to nine, enabling more of the district’s students to have access to alternative education in our district.

About The Multi-Age Program (MAP): RVSD’s ‘school of choice’ since 1996, MAP serves district-wide K – 5 students with a unique educational and governance model that has a proven track record of student success while continually evolving the curriculum collaboratively. It is currently housed at Manor Elementary School.
