Fire Rips Through Marin Apartment, Displacing 13

Damage caused by the fire is estimated to be worth between $150,000 and $200,000, fire officials said.

A two-alarm fire at an apartment complex near San Rafael has been contained Wednesday morning but resulted in the displacement of 13 residents, according to San Rafael Fire Department officials.

At 8:58 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a fire happening at 15 La Brea Way, in unincorporated Marin County, fire officials said. When firefighters arrived, they located the fire inside a second floor apartment, fire officials said.

As the fire grew, firefighters upgraded the blaze to a two-alarm fire.

Firefighters were able to locate and rescue one occupant from inside an adjoining apartment. The victim suffered minor smoke inhalation and was evaluated and treated by paramedics, according to fire officials.

Within about 20 minutes of arrival, firefighters were able contain the fire to the unit where it started, fire officials said. The apartments on both sides, as well as the one below, sustained significant smoke and water damage.

Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents, according to fire officials.

PG&E responded to the scene to secure electric and gas utilities.
