Green Carts

Marin Sanitary Service (MSS) is the Town’s hauler for waste, curbside recycling, and food scrap/yard waste collection. Weekly food scrap and yard waste services are available to all residential customers with a 64-gallon green rolling cart provided by Marin Sanitary.  These rolling carts are designed for semi-automated collection by the drivers.

Semi-automated collection systems are designed to increase efficiency and safety in the collection process.  The system allows a specialized tipper arm on the truck to lift and empty the carts.  This means that the driver does not have to lift the heavy carts to get the waste emptied into the truck.  When the cart is empty the driver can roll the empty cart back to the curb.

Currently San Anselmo residents are allowed to set out five additional 32-gallon containers of yard waste each week, along with the 64-gallon green cart.  This can equal up to a total of 224 gallons of green waste material.

But there’s a problem.  The 32-gallon cans that are purchased separately, and often very heavy, have to be emptied manually.  This increases the risk of injury to the drivers who must lift the heavy cans up and over the tipper arm and into the truck.  Adding to that problem is the fact that customers often set out cans that are larger than 32 gallons and weigh well over the 60-pound maximum that drivers are allowed to lift.  Over time, this manual lifting of overloaded cans has caused many driver injuries.

Marin Sanitary is asking for your voluntary assistance in helping to resolve this problem.  In order to keep drivers safe, keep worker compensation costs low and increase efficiency, Marin Sanitary is asking customers to consider renting up to three extra MSS rolling carts for an additional $1.78 each per month.  This fee is for the cost of the cart only.  The collection of the materials remains free of charge.  More details:

  • MSS green carts don’t have to be rented for the entire year.  They can be rented monthly or seasonally when your yard waste is increased.
  • Renting MSS green carts allows you to set out even more materials total – 256 gallons instead of 224.  That is one extra 32-gallon container for free if you rent all three extra carts.
  • The MSS green carts are on wheels which makes moving materials to the curb easier and safer for you.
  • Green carts should not be overloaded.  The lids must close completely.

All food scraps and yard waste collected by MSS is delivered to a compost facility that produces certified organic compost.  Your participation in this successful program has diverted thousands of tons from the landfill and contributed to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Economic Development Committee

The Town has a new permanent Economic Development Committee. The goal of the committee is to work with local businesses and the community at large toward a vibrant and successful local economy that meets the needs of the residents and visitors of San Anselmo.

“Our main goal is to be a connection point for our vibrant business community, our residents and the visitors of our town. We want to ensure that our local residents and our visitors get the most out of the many highly praised restaurants, wine bars and cafes, the unique cluster of antique stores and the many boutiques, gift stores and top notch salons in our town,“ said Magan Arthur, chair of the committee.

As a first step, the committee has initiated a survey of all San Anselmo businesses to identify the needs and the economic outlook of the San Anselmo merchant community. The survey can be accessed at: http://SABusinessSurvey2013.org.

The Economic Development Subcommittee meets every first Tuesday of the month at 8:45 am in the Town Council Chambers. The agendas are published in advance and are also available on the Town’s website at http://www.townofsananselmo.org/index.aspx?NID=647
