San Rafael, CA — Police in San Rafael said a man was found dead Saturday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers with the San Rafael Police Department responded around 1 p.m. Saturday to the area of Green Way and Belle Avenue, where a resident said a man was down with an injury to his head.

"Upon arrival police officers found a 22-year-old San Rafael male resident deceased with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head," police Lt. Raffaello Pata stated in a news release. "A weapon was located at the scene."

Whether the death was a suicide as their preliminary investigation seemed to indicate remains to be determined.

Patch obtained the deceased's identity but decided to withhold it at this point in the investigation out of consideration for his surviving family members.

Chief Deputy Coroner Darrell Harris said an autopsy showed no obvious signs of foul play in the death.
"... The initial scene investigation, and subsequent interview of the subject's family and review of his medical history revealed no obvious indication of foul play," Harris said in an email to Patch.

"The autopsy took place yesterday and no areas of concern were uncovered upon conclusion of the physical exam."
"The cause and manner of death are pending results of toxicology testing and conclusion of San Rafael Police Department's investigation," Harris said. "This process will take several weeks."

Patch was not immediately able to reach the San Rafael police contact associated with the case Thursday afternoon about whether the investigation has been completed.

Anyone with information that may be helpful in the investigation was asked to call San Rafael police Detective Sgt. Carl Huber at 415-485-3000.
