Scarlatti The Lamentations of Jeremiah

Please join us for a wonderful evening of music by Scarlatti, Handel and Corelli.

Internationally renowned opera star Kirsten Blaise joins Voices of Music for a program of Scarlatti, Handel & Corelli, featuring Scarlatti’s extraordinary setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah performed on original instruments.

The Lamentations of Jeremiah have held a special place for renaissance and baroque composers since Petrucci’s magnificent collection of 1506, which was one of the first music books published in Europe. In the Latin text, each verse begins with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet: Aleph, Beth, Gimel,Daleth, He, and composers since Petrucci have “illuminated” each letter with impressionistic melismas that echo the decorative arts of the medieval scribes. Two hundred years after Petrucci, Scarlatti continued this tradition in his extraordinary setting of 1708, a commission for the same group of Cavalieri that sponsored Pergolesi’s setting of the Stabat Mater. For this concert we will use a new edition, based on Scarlatti’s original manuscript.
