Second Baby Bobcat Rescued In San Anselmo

Officials at WildCare believe the male bobcat is related to a female cub found a few houses down about two weeks ago.

SAN ANSELMO, CA – Two baby bobcats have been rescued in the same San Anselmo neighborhood this month.

A cub was found over the weekend in a tree near Sorich Park in San Anselmo. A resident alerted San Rafael-based WildCare, which picked up the cub.

Officials at WildCare, a wildlife hospital, believe the male bobcat is related to a female cub found a few houses down about two weeks ago.

"The two kittens were both dehydrated upon intake and they had a lot of fleas and ticks, but they were otherwise healthy," WildCare spokeswoman Alison Hermance said.

Officials do not know what happened to their mother. Staff unsuccessfully attempted to reunite the family.

"Bobcats at this age should be in a protected den and shouldn't be out and crying where they can be found by people," Hermance said. "Perhaps these kittens' mother was forced to leave her den for reasons unknown.

"Whatever caused the disruption in this bobcat family's life, the kittens were both found outside, obviously in distress. They were in a precarious position and needed to be rescued."

Both cubs have both been transferred to Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley. The center in San Jose already had a couple of orphaned bobcats, Hermance said.

"These two will grow up in care there, learning the skills they'll need to survive in the wild, and will return to Marin for release once they are old enough," she said.

WildCare encouraged the public to report baby animals that might need to be rescued by calling 415-456-7283.
