Student Loses Hand In Accident: Marin Community Rallies
Fundraiser underway for Luke O'Heidhin, a senior at Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo, whose hand was severed over spring break.

SAN ANSELMO, CA – Community supporters are stepping up to help Luke O’Heidhin, a senior at Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo, whose right hand was severed while working at a construction site over spring break.
A GoFundMe campaign was established this week by the teen's aunt to aid the family with Luke's recovery and medical expenses not covered by insurance. With a goal of $185,000, the fund – in four days – had nearly $145,000 in donations.
Hopes are high that Luke, a 4.0-GPA, student-athlete who played varsity soccer and was on the track team, will attend in the fall or following spring one of the many colleges to which he was accepted, his aunt wrote on the fundraising site, "Help Luke with Medical and Prosthetic Hand."

"His younger brother, Kyle, bravely intervened to save Luke's hand, but unfortunately his hand was too damaged," the aunt said. "Our entire family is suffering, but we are, all, thankful he is alive."
Luke's injury was treated by micro- and reconstructive surgeons in San Francisco, and he will have mobility in his wrist, which can better facilitate the use of a prosthetic hand once healing from surgery is complete, his aunt wrote, adding that his "great attitude, strength and determination have been an inspiration and source of pride for all of us."
"Although the road to physical and emotional healing will be long and difficult, Luke is blessed with loving family and friends and amazing medical care," his aunt wrote on the GoFundMe site.
"Your support is needed to help with medical expenses not covered by insurance. No amount is too small. Your help is truly appreciated by all of us who love and admire Luke!"
